Excision Tour Visuals Fall 2024

Client: Excision

Year: 2024

I had the pleasure of designing two visuals for Excision's 2024 fall tour! This was a particularly fun one as I was given the creative freedom to experiment and do whatever I wanted. Additionally, I've always liked Excision's shows and have seen him multiple times, so getting to contribute to that experience was a dream come true!

This first visual was pure synesthesia. I listened to the song over and over and animated these abstract scenes based on what I thought the sounds would look like. There are a few distinct parts, the first one has this distorted effect that sounds like something moving far away from the microphone and then back towards it, so I animated this scene where the X logo lands in the center of this maximal electric pillow environment and moves away from the camera and back towards it. I really wanted this one to just be visual insanity with as much color, animation and movement as possible so I decided on an FX heavy 3D approach with animated 2D elements to add colorful detail. Then during the main 'drop' part, it has this modulated bass effect that sounded like constantly flowing liquid to me. So I created this undulating wave of colorful liquidy spaghetti-like strands that move and flow constantly.

This second song sounded distinctly darker in tone with two distinctly different parts in the song. I thought the dark vibe from the first half of the song sounded like it could be some sort of ominous science fiction environment that continuously changes over time with large environmental changes happening on the big beats, so I created this constantly animating, constantly shifting spaceship tunnel. The second half of the song is so unexpectedly different from the first part, so I decided to mirror that with the visual and create something equally unexpected. The beat is so rapid as to be almost constant, so I created this dynamic, splashy liquid environment with flashing strobe lights that mirror the tempo.
